Why don’t we just speak English?

That’s what a Chinese language exchange partner said to me back in 2013, and it was so deflating that I nearly gave up learning.

I remember that time so well because I’d been really trying to learn. I was committed, spending hours a day on what (I hoped) was moving me toward my dream of fluency.

But when I went to speak to native speakers, my mind would go blank. I’d have a mini-panic, fumble around for the right word, say something that doesn’t make sense, and with a cringe-y smile, the native would say, “Why don’t we just speak English?”

If something similar has happened to you, then you know: This straight-up sucks and seriously wounds your confidence. You start to go into a mental tailspin as you wonder:

“Am I even making progress? It sure seems like what I’m doing isn’t working.”

And that leads to…

“Let me try another APP. Another website. Watch another YouTube video…”

And when that doesn’t work, if you’re not careful, you can even start to think:

“Who do I think I am trying to learn such a ‘hard’ language? Maybe I’m just not smart enough. I should quit…”

Not only do I understand this, I used to have those exact thoughts all the time.

Eventually, though, I realized that it doesn’t have to be that way. I remembered what acclaimed educator and composer Jack Stamp said to me way back in 2005:

“Good [language learners] practice until they get it right. Great ones practice until they can’t get it wrong.”

-Jack Stamp, Director of Bands at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (he actually said “musicians,” but same-same)

Imagine if…

…you could open your mouth and produce Chinese without worrying if it was grammatically a mess or the tones were wrong…

…you knew that your energy and time were well spent, and you were on the path to having smooth Mandarin conversations.

…you speak and understand basic Chinese in 30 days, with just 30-60 minutes per day of practice.

That’s not far-fetched at all. No matter what skill you’re trying to acquire, there is low-hanging fruit waiting to be plucked, and we’ve put together the ultimate system to ensure that you not only memorize all of it but also speak with clarity & confidence.

We call it…

The Mandarin Speaking & Listening Kickstarter (MSLK)

1000+ Listen & Repeat Phrases to Build Your Confidence & Master Basic Mandarin

MSLK is designed specifically for people like you: Chinese learners who need to make speaking the basics automatic. It’s more than a course; it’s a catalyst for confidence and up-leveling your skills in Mandarin communication.

The MSLK program is meticulously crafted to address the common challenges of Mandarin learners. It’s a simple, 7-step process that provides a structured yet flexible pathway to Mandarin fluency. No more feelings of overwhelm or confusion about what to focus on next.

Most importantly, however, it gets you to open your dang mouth and speak!

Don’t make the same “overthinking” mistake I did…

I’m a big fan of efficient language learning, so I thought every technique had to be a “hack” to reach fluency & literacy faster. If it wasn’t a wildly new technique that promised to 10x my productivity, I ignored it. While many of those techniques worked, please, don’t be like me and blind yourself to this simple fact

Listening and repeating is absolutely necessary to getting over the beginner hump.

This is true for two reasons:

  1. You have to develop the mouth muscle memory for the new language. The only way to do that is through practice & repetition. It’s not simply memorizing facts; it’s “going to the gym” for your mouth muscles.

  2. The most basic (aka highest frequency) words in the language don’t necessarily have to be learned bottom-up with a foundational understanding of the language. They’re so common that you can easily memorize them through systematic repetition.

The best part is that this is super simple to do with…

the MSLK 7-Step Routine

The MSLK course contains 30 lessons covering 100 concepts using 1000+ phrases. You can be absolutely sure that by using the MSLK 7-Step Routine, you’ll be able to think & produce all of these phrases by the end of the course.

Here’s how it’s done:

Step 1: Flashcard Focus

Begin each day by clearing your flashcard reviews, ensuring a solid foundation and consistent progress.

Step 2: Follow the ‘Learn, Listen & Repeat' (LLR) Audio Files

Dive into audio lessons designed to enhance your speaking and listening skills in real-time.

Step 3: Pinyin Synchronization

While listening, read the Pinyin in the lesson descriptions to reinforce your understanding of Mandarin spellings, sounds, and tones.

Step 4: Expand Your Lexicon

Add new cards to your flashcard app to continuously expand your arsenal of words and phrases.

Step 5: The “1st Day’s Review”

Immediately review the cards you added to strengthen your retention and recall.

Step 6: Follow the 'Think & Produce' (TAP) Audio Files

After two days, engage with more advanced audio exercises to test your comprehension and production skills.

Step 7: Immersion Playlist Building

Throughout the course, curate and maintain a Mandarin immersion playlist to surround yourself with the lesson content 24/7.

Why, This Time, You WILL Succeed...

This routine ensures enough repetitions that your mouth develops muscle memory and you feel no hesitation in saying the essential phrases of Mandarin.

Not to mention, while you can take the course at whatever speed is comfortable for you, it’s reasonable to stick to a “one lesson per day” pace. That means you could finish this course 30 days from now.

You could be in a position where a Chinese native never says, “Why don’t we just speak English?” to you again because your skill will be undeniable.

From Two Learners Like You

Luke Neale and I have been working on Mandarin Blueprint since 2016 because we encountered a rare phenomenon: We made every mistake in the book for our first year of learning and then completely turned it around in our second year.

We went from what honestly felt like an agonizing struggle the first year to passing the highest level Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) by the end of the second year. Heck, I nearly quit, and a year later, I was giving speeches in Chinese:

So trust me when I say that listening & repeating with MSLK will be a massive boon to your study!

A Note of Caution

Consider the cost of inaction here. Language learning is not just about gaining a new skill; it’s about opening doors to opportunities that could dramatically change your life. Without taking this step, you might find yourself still struggling to communicate in Mandarin a year from now, missing out on business opportunities, cultural experiences, and personal connections that fluency can bring.

This isn’t just about avoiding stagnation; it’s about actively preventing the regret of a missed opportunity. Every day without these skills is a lost chance to connect, grow, and succeed in a Mandarin-speaking environment. Don’t let another year slip by, wishing you had taken the leap to transform your Mandarin skills. Let’s make this the year you finally break through the barriers and achieve the fluency you’ve been dreaming of.

FAQs

“Listen & Repeat” is necessary but not sufficient to reach fluency. Frankly, this is part of why we didn’t make this course until after we constructed our flagship curriculum, “The Blueprint.” Other products that offer listen & repeat programs make claims like “Reach fluency in 10 days!” which is pure bull-honky. You need both a “bottom-up” approach of learning characters, words & grammar (The Blueprint) ALONG with the “top-down” approach of listen & repeat.

Listen & repeat may not be sufficient, but it is ESSENTIAL. While acquiring Chinese requires developing your mind, you can’t neglect to develop your mouth muscles! Mandarin Chinese utilizes mouth positions that are not common in English, so the muscles are underdeveloped, and there’s only one way to get them to become stronger: PRACTICE.

Luckily, mouth muscles are small, so they take less time to strengthen than your chest, quads, or hamstrings.

Furthermore, MSLK does develop your “Chinese brain.” Imagine the connections between your brain cells like a highway (which honestly is not that far off of an analogy). Developing the Chinese brain will require “forging new highways.”

If you want to build a new highway, you first have to clear away the forest and create a path to lay the road. Using MSLK will “clear the forest” & build a “dirt road” ready for the construction team to come in and spread the concrete. Sure, traveling on a dirt road is slower than a highway, but it’s WAY faster than navigating a thick forest. “The Blueprint” is where you’ll build the “super-highway” on top of the dirt road.

This course focuses entirely on speaking. If you’re ready to dive into characters, we recommend signing up for “The Blueprint” (where you can learn 3050+ characters, nbd).

There are 30 content lessons (plus a bonus lesson), and it’s reasonable to complete one lesson per day.

That said, it’s an online course. You can take it at whatever pace suits you. If you had some navy seal-like discipline, you could do 4 to 5 lessons a day and finish it in a week (not recommended, though), or you could do one lesson every three days and finish it in 90 days. Entirely up to you.

While you’ll naturally pick up on a LOT of pronunciation in MSLK, that isn’t the focus of this course. That said, our most popular course, called “Pronunciation Mastery,” covers every syllable in detail, and combined with the add-on “Pronunciation Practice Toolkit,” you’ll have a killer combination of pronunciation training, practice drills, and MSLK to practically apply everything you learn from PM. They’re a highly recommended combination.

MSLK covers survival Chinese. The vocabulary is intentionally limited to only the most frequent verbs, adjectives, nouns, and grammatical structures. By focusing on a small vocabulary, you’ll repeat the basic sentence structures enough so that they become second nature.

Here’s specifically what is covered:

Greetings
“Hello” with 你好
