OMG Luke and Phil!!!!!

I did it!?
I spent money on my little tiny idea of being able to speak Mandarin. People think I’m crazy. The few that I dare tell.
Thanks for your support and encouragement through your’s and Phil’s vids and thanks to everyone that has supported both of you to create such a wonderful program.

Yayyyyyy It’s 5 am here and I’m awake to study Mandarin.

Regards
Yen Cleary

Dave Manthey on It’s a Word! 只

‘When reading chinese characters, how do you know which tone to use? The appearance of the character for zhi doesn’t change in the sentences above, even though the tone does.

Wil R on Tone Change Rules Part 2: 不 bù

Yes, when I am in Chinatown the native speakers just flow in their talk. Sometimes I know what they’re saying but it still sounds different from expected. That’s really the next level being able to speak with that flow.

JOHN CRAMER on Navigating Phase 1 Level Reviews

Wow! I can’t believe I’ve come this far already!

Christopher Dolman on Make a Movie #1564 – 启

Final character, made it! Kinda hard to believe really – now I’m going back to boost the vocab and immerse myself in the stories. Thanks Phil and Luke, you’re right – turn up every day, change it up if you’re not enjoying it, don’t let the short game get in the way of the long game, and stop writing down those scenes!

Micaela Ellison on 完美 in Context

那如果你还是觉得不完美,你又要写一次吗?

Based on the grammar point lesson that follows, I think I could replace 又 here with 再. So would it be correct to say that both 又 and 再 can be used for present and future, but only 又 can be used for the past?

Examples:

那如果你还是觉得不完美,你要再写一次吗?

要是再下雨, 那还得改日子。
Yào shì zài xià yǔ, nà hái děi gǎi rìzi.
If it rains again, the date will have to be changed

我叫他别再来, 可他又来了。
Wǒ jiào tā bié zài lái, kě tā yòu lái le.
I told him not to come again, but here he is.

[indicating the repetition or continuation of an action] again; repeatedly; continually

又出错了
yòu chūcuò le
make another mistake

说了又说
shuō le yòu shuō
say sth. over and over again

[indicating an addition to a given scope] also; in addition

除了工资, 他又挣了不少外快。
Chúle gōngzī, tā yòu zhèng le bùshǎo wàikuài.
Besides salary, he makes a handsome extra income.

他又要了一份饭菜。
Tā yòu yào le yī fèn fàn-cài.
He asked for a second helping of food.

37:19 Vocab Living Links

This section covers “Living Link” mnemonic techniques to remember Chinese words of two or more characters. Here’s a video explaining the theory behind it.

说服 – an image from the 1957 movie “12 Angry Men”

Ceri Woods on Vocab Unlocked from 网: 上网 – 网上 – 网友

Fabulous… ‘on net’ and ‘net on’ that’s not confusing at all!

For上网 I used a picture of someone on a surfboard on internet icons, and for网上 the icon for ‘online’ (it looks like a net that’s on the world) to try and remember which character comes first in each word… (ON the NET… NET ON the world)

Melissa Niesen ?? 倪茉莉 on Vocab Unlocked from 包: 面包

I love a bread with a thick, chewy crust. 面 has a meaning of surface. The crust of a loaf of bread is the surface, wrapping up the rest of it.

Mirko R on Vocab Unlocked from 听: 好听 – 听力 – 听见 – 听话 – 听说

In the movie Amélie (Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain) there is this scene where Amélie tells the blind man what is going on around him, making him have this big enlightened smile. I think this is a great representation of 听见.

49:36

Sriram P C on Vocab Unlocked from 算: 总算 – 打算

I thought of Dr. MLK Jr. speech :“Free at last, Free at last, Thank God almighty we are free at last.” But the online translation I saw translates as “終於自由啦!” Translation here.

darci mallon on Vocab Unlocked from 解: 了解 – 解决

Sherlock Holmes with his magnifying glass for ‘to solve’.
